People often assume I became a photographer after retiring from pastoral ministry, but the truth is that photography has been woven into my ministry for many years. While serving as a pastor, I regularly documented church events, created church directories, and photographed weddings, family portraits, baptisms, and other special occasions at the request of the families I served. Over time, what began as another way to minister to people developed into a genuine passion for preserving life's most meaningful moments. Today, I have the privilege of serving as the Executive Director of the Spurgeon Baptist Association of Churches while also operating Terry Coker Photography. Whether I am encouraging churches, equipping pastors, or creating timeless portraits for families, my calling remains the same—to serve people well, tell their stories with care, and help preserve a legacy that will be treasured for generations.
A Love for People Never Retires
One of the greatest lessons ministry has taught me is that every person has a story.
Every family has a history.
Every season of life carries unique joys, challenges, victories, and memories.
As an associate pastor, I had the privilege of walking alongside people during some of life's most significant moments. I officiated weddings, celebrated milestones, and comforted families during seasons of grief. Those experiences taught me to value people deeply and to recognize that the moments we often take for granted are the very ones that shape our lives.
Photography allows me to continue serving people by preserving those moments for generations to come.
Photographs Become Part of a Family's Legacy
One of the realities the ministry continually reinforced is how quickly life passes.
Children grow up.
Parents grow older.
Families change.
The moments we assume we will always remember eventually fade with time.
Photographs help us hold on to those memories.
A portrait is more than an image. It becomes part of a family's story. Years later, that photograph may remind someone of a season they never want to forget.
I have seen families treasure photographs after the loss of a loved one. I have watched parents become emotional when they see images of children who are now grown. I have heard people say, "I'm so glad we took these pictures when we did."
Those experiences remind me that photography is not simply about creating beautiful images. It is about preserving a legacy.
Seeing Beauty in Ordinary Moments
Ministry taught me to slow down and pay attention.
Some of life's most meaningful moments are often the simplest ones:
- A child holding a parent's hand
- A husband making his wife laugh
- A grandparent watching grandchildren play
- A quiet glance between family members
Photography allows me to capture those moments before they disappear.
While dramatic landscapes and stunning sunsets certainly have their place, I find myself most drawn to genuine connection. The authentic smile. The spontaneous laugh. The moment no one planned.
Those are often the photographs families treasure most.
Photography Allows Me to Continue Serving Others
One of the things I have always loved most about ministry is serving people.
Photography gives me another opportunity to do exactly that.
When families trust me to photograph them, they are inviting me into an important chapter of their lives. I never take that responsibility lightly.
My goal is not simply to deliver a gallery of beautiful images.
My goal is to create an experience where families feel comfortable, valued, and genuinely cared for. Many people arrive at a photo session feeling nervous or awkward. Helping them relax, enjoy the experience, and walk away with photographs they will cherish is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
Lessons the Ministry Has Brought Into My Photography
The years I have spent in ministry continue to shape the way I approach photography today.
Ministry has taught me:
- To listen carefully.
- To value relationships over transactions.
- To be patient with people.
- To appreciate every season of life.
- To understand the importance of legacy.
These lessons influence every session I photograph.
Whether I am working with a young family, a graduating senior, or a couple celebrating decades of marriage, my focus remains the same: people matter.
A New Chapter with the Same Calling
Although my responsibilities have changed over the years, my calling has remained remarkably consistent.
As Executive Director of the Spurgeon Baptist Association of Churches, I continue to encourage churches and support pastors in their mission of making disciples. Through Terry Coker Photography, I have the privilege of serving families by preserving the memories that tell their unique stories.
Whether I'm standing in front of a congregation or behind a camera, my desire is the same: to serve others with excellence, to celebrate God's faithfulness in every season of life, and to help preserve a legacy that future generations will treasure.
Photography is more than a profession for me. It is another avenue of ministry—one that allows me to tell stories without words and remind families that the moments they are living today will one day become the memories they cherish most.
